14 dogs killed in pet boarding house fire

Authorities say 14 dogs have died in a fire at a Central California boarding house that cares for animals while their owners are on vacation. Monterey Fire Department Inspector Mike Ventimiglia said Monday it appears the dogs died of smoke inhalation. He says a cause of the Sunday afternoon fire at the Home Away from Home pet spa is still being investigated. A dog survived the fire along with six cats and a tarantula. He says the business owner had left the building to pick up two other dogs when the fire started. Ventimiglia says the fire has been emotionally devastating for pet owners. The business owner was not immediately available for comment on Monday.
